Stephen Inglis Fall SoCal Tour

Stephen Inglis Fall Tour

One of my favorite slack key guitarists is coming to Southern California for several performances in September. If you live in the area, don’t miss the opportunity to experience this immensely talented singer/songwriter and guitarist. Stephen plays great slack key, but also performs his own compositions in more contemporary styles.

George Kahumoku’s Slack Key Guitar & Ukulele Workshop

I’m looking forward to George’s Workshop once again this year and, as the 20 year anniversary of the workshop, it’s going to be a special one.

Over the course of the eight-day workshop week, we’ll have a total of 170 classes – instrumental classes for slack key guitar, ukulele, and steel guitar, and cultural classes that will include Hula, Hawaiian Language, Hana Kapa, Lei Making, Hawaiian Cooking, Lauhala Weaving. Hawaiian Language, Voice, and Hawaiian Fishing.

And once again, we’ll have an amazing faculty that will include the top slack key guitar and ukulele masters from the islands, along with renowned cultural and craft instructors.

The Workshop goes from Sunday, June 18th to Sunday, June 25th. There is still time to register and a few spaces left. For any student of Hawaiian music and culture, this is an experience that should not be missed. Truly life-changing.

Masters of Hawaiian Music – Santa Barbara

I was fortunate to be asked to photograph and video this Masters of Hawaiian Music Concert for George Kahumoku. It was held at Campbell Hall, on the campus of UC Santa Barbara on April 9th, and featured George, Kawika Kahiapo, and Nathan Aweau. On the same bill was “Na Lei Hula I Ka Wekiu” under the direction of Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakane. Assisting me on the shoot was Kevin Ayers, also a talented photographer. I’ll be posting video clips soon. Below is a shot of George, Nathan, and Kawika at the sound check.

Stephen Inglis House Concert

Slack Key Guitarist Stephen Inglis was joined by Shawn Jones at a house concert in Manhattan Beach Last Tuesday. These talented musicians play a range of musical styles, from Hawaiian Slack Key to Blues to acoustic folk/pop, with a selection of their original material included. It was a great concert – catch either or both of these fine musicians when you can!

Danny Carvalho House Concert

Danny Carvalho

Up-and-coming young slack key guitarist Danny Carvalho was in town from Oahu, and gave a house concert at Nancy Cook’s place in Manhattan Beach last evening. Danny is a student of Ozzie Kotani’s and a clearly talented slack key guitar player. He treated the audience to some slack key standards, as well as some of his original material. Nani Edgar and her mom, Sylvia Puanani Edgar, danced hula to several songs. Danny is a great example of the next generation of slack key guitarists, and has already begun to establish his own unique style… definitely an artist to watch!

2014-06-16 1

This year’s George Kahumoku Jr. Slack Key Guitar & Ukulele Workshop just wound up on Maui and, by all accounts, it was one of the most successful workshops to date. The workshop staff included George Khumoku Jr., Jeff Peterson, Paul Togioka, Ledward Kaapana, Kevin Brown, Herb Ohta Jr., Derick Sebastian, Garrett Probst, Jason Jerome, Wainani Kealoha, Joel Katz, and Wende Keaka Stitt.

Classes included beginning to advanced slack key guitar and ukulele instruction, Hawaiian steel guitar, hula, and Hawaiian kapa making. The workshop was held this year at the Napili Kai Beach Resort, where evening kanikapilas concluded each day’s activities. On the final Sunday of the workshop, students performed on stage at the Annual Maui Slack Key Guitar Festival at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului. The 2014 workshop saw record attendance, with new folks accounting for almost half of the participants.
